The busiest time of the year for moving house is the summer and demand can often outstrip supply especially in the Capital. People considering moving house or flat will often hang on until the Spring before advertising the properties. There is a perception that gardens in flower and a greater sense of hope can filter down to achieving better prices for property.
So properties are often put on the open market in March to May with a view to completing and moving house in the Summer months from June through to September. These dates coincide with the school holidays where parents can co-ordinate a house removal with a change of schools. All these factors contribute to a bit of a stampede in securing a removal date with a good storage removal company.
This is compounded by renters lease agreements having a month end termination dates which makes the end of the month even busier still and sees demand at its peak in the Removals and Storage market. Less scrupulous Removal companies are sometimes tempted to charge higher prices for these peak dates especially if you try to book your removal at short notice.
Even less scrupulous removal companies may be tempted to try an exorbitant price for someone who is clearly desperate to get a moving date booked and the consequence may be that another person who has already secured a date with same company may find themselves without a removal company in the hour of need.
So what can you do to avoid these kind of disasters at a time which is reckoned to be one of the most stressful event in anyone’s life?
- Chose a reputable company. Not so easy perhaps? If you have not successfully used a company before ask a friend who is prepared to recommend a company having had first-hand experience of the removal firm they used.
- Check the company is BAR approved. The BAR is the British Association of Removers which has a code of conduct all its members adhere and carries out periodic checks on all its members to ensure they are adhering to the code and putting into practice.
- Book as early as you can and make sure your completion date is as certain as it can be. Late changes to dates may end up costing you more money.
- Try and avoid end of month dates if possible to complete your move.
