How to Create Garden Space in London

It’s not always easy having green spaces in London, especially in the inner-city properties where outside spaces might be predominantly concrete, or space is limited. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have your very own green or garden area and here are some tips for Ward Thomas on how to create garden space or green spaces in London.

The first thing you need to do is establish what space is available to you and what type of space that is. Although a lot of people will have some garden space for the sake of highlighting the ability to create gardens spaces everywhere, we’ll use a backyard concrete space in a terraced row as our example.

The second thing to do is clear whatever space you can – any rubbish needs to be recycled where possible but don’t throw everything away just yet – there might be some things you can upcycle. You need a blank canvas to work from, wherever possible. Now it’s time to use our imagination – you can this clear space of concrete so what can you use to grow things like vegetables? You might think this is a moot point because you can’t grow anything on concrete. This isn’t true though – all you need is soil, fertiliser (organic) and somewhere to grow them in. If you can get a hold of some used tyres, you can stack them, put soil inside, and grow potatoes or other root vegetables. If you can get a long and large container, possibly an old bathtub or a wardrobe, you can repeat the same process and grow carrots, tomatoes and various veg. If you really want to go for it, there are options for greenhouses that can be erected on concrete. Herbs are easily grown on windowsills, and they don’t require a huge amount of effort, but you’ll have to pay a lot of time and attention to your urban garden.

The possibilities are only limited by your imagination – go mad, get some lanterns, a brazier, potted plants, chairs and a table and you will soon have a fantastic green space in London.

There will be situations where you just can’t have a garden space – people who live in apartment complexes may get tired of only being able to have indoor plants and herb trays on the windowsill and the wish to have a proper garden may be strong enough to consider moving to another part of London or even to a town within a manageable commute to London.
