Weekend breaks are an excellent way to relieve the stresses of modern living. For those who can take regular time off, a holiday home away from London is the perfect way to get away from it all. Investing in a second property is also a good idea, especially if you choose a location that’s well priced now and increases in popularity.

London life requires balance, and regular breaks have a proven beneficial to improved health and our quality of life. To help you get started, the Ward Thomas team has compiled some of our favourite places that would be perfect for a holiday home.

Five Ideal Places for a Holiday Home –

Bournemouth – with an average journey time of two hours from London, Bournemouth is a popular choice for holiday homes. Dorset has some of the best beaches in England, and Bournemouth boasts seven miles of unspoiled golden sand. If you want lots of sun and a vibrant seaside town, Bournemouth ticks both boxes.

Brighton – there is nowhere quite like Brighton. It’s a unique and attractive seaside town that has something to suit everyone’s tastes. It’s an hour and a quarter train journey from London, and it’s known for being a day-trip destination for Londoners.

Dover – with its iconic white cliffs, Dover is somewhat of an English legend. This port town is still a popular route to France, and it’s just over an hour and a half journey from London. It’s one of the main port for cruise ships, and it has decent transport links by rail or road. Dover might not be the first name that springs to mind for a holiday home, but you might find a few hidden gems here.

Broadstairs – although Broadstairs is still a popular seaside resort town, it doesn’t have the same large influx as Margate or Ramsgate. A recent report noted a downturn in numbers of tourists which has led to a general improvement in local properties. Broadstairs has excellent transport links and is one hour forty-five minutes from London. Another potential hidden gem, it’s worth a visit.

Salcombe – one of the trendier places on our list. Salcombe is in Devon, and this traditional sailing community attracts affluent second home investors. It’s the furthest afield on our list, which an average journey time of four and a half hours by road and rail.

Types of Holiday Home –

Buying a second home can be a savvy investment, as well as an excellent retreat. A lot of the places we’ve listed are accessible within a manageable car ride or train journey from London.

The of the most popular types of a holiday home that springs to mind is the cottage. A comfortable small and rustic cottage in the countryside or a seaside one-level beach house, perfect for the summer months.

Your search for the ideal holiday home doesn’t have to be limited to cottages. Additionally, there are plenty of semi-detached and terraced housing within a few minutes-walk from the beach in Brighton or Bournemouth. It’s a good idea to contact an estate agent to help you search for your second home. They can filter out the best ones and arrange viewings, which helps if you can prepare a few in advance.
